About Luis
I am Luis Valdez; I have been counseling individuals and couples for over half a decade, and I do not see myself stopping any time soon. I started my career at the Texas State Hospital, helping clients with a wide variety of mental health conditions. The adversities and challenges I went through at the hospital helped inspire and shape what R.E.M. Counseling is today.
One of my challenges was struggling with bouts of depression that left me feeling debilitated daily. I knew there had to be a better way than only doing general talk therapy and taking medication. In turn, I continuously educated myself and left myself open to new ideas to help my healing and help heal others around me. My journey is constantly progressing, and I refuse to remain stagnant in learning new and innovative ways to help myself and others.
No one has all the answers, but I want to help people find the ones they seek and point them toward a healthier and happier life.

What makes us different?
My approach is not your typical talk therapy (where we talk for 1 hour and then see you next week). I want to provide you with the tools to stand on your own. We will start moving toward your desired life, helping you cope with stress and triggers. Most of the time, we will talk, but depending on our plan, we will work toward the healthy life you want by redirecting intrusive or traumatic thoughts with guided homework and daily/weekly journaling. In addition, I provide personal one-on-one calls for you to reach out to me during your tough times so that we can practice the coping skills together.
I also understand the mind-body connection and the importance of caring for the body. For those interested, another benefit of this counseling is that I incorporate scheduled self-care activities by collaborating with other professionals to provide you with services such as yoga, therapeutic massages, meal planning, etc.
I am here to help the whole person and provide custom therapy that meets your needs.
